Biological Link Between Stress, Anxiety and Depression Identified

April 2010
Scientist at the University of Western Ontario used different experiemens to find a new connection between depression and anxiety. In their findings they found that there may be a new drug and drug targets that can be used to target depression to treat it more effectively. Depression, anxiety and other related mood disorders share the same distinctions of being the most prevalent causes of chronic illness.

We learned about stress in chapter 11 and depression in chapter 14. I chose this topic because i was diagnosed with depression in January. It wasn't anything that people think of when they hear "depression". One simple thing can alter your mood. For me, it was many things up against me til i broke down. There are so many drugs available for depression although it would be nice to have one that focused specifically on depression.

Shut Off Worries By Turning On The TV

January 2010
Studies show that watching favorite television shows relaxes women and boosts their happiness even more than shopping. It works because by identifying characters and getting caught up in their life's, it distracts us from our own. It also stimulates the natural maternal response that raises level of feel good serotonin.

I chose this topic because my mom watches the Young and the Restless so i can relate. It was interesting to read why watching TV shows can relax you. In chapter 11 we learned about coping with stress. In the article it says we take ourselves out of our lives and get caught up in the lives of the people on the TV show. My mom watches her favorite TV shows so for 30 minutes she can get away from stress and reality and find herself somewhere else.

Why Good Men Go Bad

April, 2010

Everyone has seen a guy who has high values who has done something that does not match is high morals. Sonya Sachdeva, a psychology researcher says "people tend to subconsciously maintain an ideal level of mortality. When someone engages in behavior that falls above or below his 'set point of morality'-say, by doing a good deed like donating to charity- he may instinctively act in the opposite way to restore balance". When people's emotions are neutral they think they can not control their impulse when it comes to temptation. People who believe they have a high level of self-control are usually the ones to give into temptation. Self-control requires an effort so each exposure to temptation increases the chance the person will act upon it.

I chose this topic because it seems interesting. In chapter 10 it talks about sexual behavior and sexual deviance. Psychologically, people cheat for many reasons. Some listed in the book were resentment of the partner who feels he or she has less power, lack of trust, lack of physical attraction, or even lack of sexual skills. However, in this article, the author wrote about new findings on cheating and how good men cheat to balance their behavior and emotions. They way I think about it though, men cheat because they don't wanna be emotionally attached to one person. They want to feel like they can get out and have a back up plan when ever they need.

An Imperfect Reality

The author begins by explaining that more and more developmental disorders afflict children in the United States. Americans are starting to pay more attention to children’s mental health. People are not more educated about disorders now than they were in the past. However, it is now okay to acknowledge that children aren’t “perfect”. One of the first disorders the public was conscious about was autism. Autism is a brain disorder that impairs a person’s ability to communicate, socialize, and participate in group behavior. As early as 3, a child could begin having symptoms of autism. About 1 in 150 American children are autistic. This is the fastest growing developmental disorder in the United States. People and organizations all over the world are raising public awareness about autism. Most of the commercials reveal how the reality of autism crushes unrealistic ideas of American boys and girls. As the commercials play on, one realizes their child would be that 1 in 150. The sponsors logo and slogan tells the parent to pay attention to the development of the parent’s child. Then the ad scares us. It hits us in between idealism and our fear, between dreams and the truth.

I couldn't find a chapter about Autism but if i could put it in a chapter i would put it in 13 or 14. I know we did not cover Autism in class but i think it relates to what we have covered so far. Autism is a developmental disorder that appears in the first three years of a child's life, and affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skill. These things that describe Autism relates to things we've studied in class. I chose this topic because people need to be more aware of Autism.

Scientists Teach Australian Marsupial to Aid in Its Own Survival

Date: April 16, 2010

The poisonous cane toad has been killing the northern quoll population. Scientists have trained the quoll to dislike the taste of the toad so the quoll wont be poisoned. To do this, researchers fed young quolls tiny cane toads that were laced with a chemical that would make them nauseated. However, the small toads would not kill the quoll just give them a bed experience. Over all, the conditioned female quolls lived twice as long as the other females. The conditioned males lived five times longer than the other males.

I chose this article because it is about behavior modification. In chapter five we did a project on behavior modification. For my project I chose increasing my exercise. I was so inspired that I signed my mom and I up for a 60 mile walk for breast cancer. In this experiment I received a reward whenever my goal was met. In the experiment above the quoll didn’t receive a reward. In both experiments a certain behavior was changed.
